How to become a Mathematician / Statistician

Works on the mathematics behind science, finance and technology.

What does a Mathematician / Statistician actually do?

More about this career

Works on the maths underneath other fields – cryptography, modelling, optimisation – either in academia/research or applied in finance, tech and engineering. A pure maths or statistics degree is a strong generalist base that opens doors into actuarial work, data science and quantitative finance, not just teaching or research.

  • English: level 5 if it is your Home Language, level 5 if it is your First Additional Language
  • Mathematics: level 6 (70% or more)
  • NBT – The NBT is required for Science.

This figure comes from the Wits schools-liaison Grade 12 guide, which is headed for 2026 entry. We have not yet found a 2027 course-finder page confirming it, so treat it as the most recent official figure rather than a confirmed 2027 one.

Wits APS 44 points

  • English: level 7 if it is your Home Language, level 7 if it is your First Additional Language
  • Mathematics: level 7 (80% or more)
  • Physical Sciences: level 7 (80% or more)
  • NBT – The NBT is required for Science.

The 2027 course-finder page says APS 44+; the 2026 schools-liaison guide says 42+. We show the course-finder figure because it is the more recent official source, but the two do disagree - check with Wits if you are between 42 and 44.
