Diagnoses and treats animals - pets, livestock and wildlife.
The BVSc is typically a five-to-six-year professional degree, and SAVC (South African Veterinary Council) registration is required before you can practise. It is currently offered at only one South African university.
Veterinary Science is one of the earliest-closing programmes in the country – at the one university that offers it, applications for this degree close before every other faculty there, often by the end of May. See the Dates page for the exact closing dates.
Diagnoses and treats animals – companion animals, livestock, wildlife and work animals – and because there’s only one South African university offering the BVSc, places are extremely limited and competition for them is intense. Many graduates go into private small-animal or large-animal practice; others move into state veterinary services, wildlife conservation, research or the livestock industry.
