How UCT scores you

Every university does this differently.

Checked against the official source

UCT Faculty Points Score

UCT adds your six best subject percentages, excluding Life Orientation, but always including English and any subject the degree requires. A result below 40% in a subject scores nothing. For Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Humanities and Law this is your Faculty Points Score (FPS), out of 600.

This score means nothing at another university – it can’t be compared with any other university’s.

What we couldn’t confirm
  • The only UCT document we could read is the 2025 guidelines; the 2027 prospectus (which our programme requirements come from) could not be read in full. The APS rule is assumed unchanged.
  • UCT Health Sciences (out of 900: APS plus NBT, plus 10 points for a third official language) needs your NBT results, so we do not calculate it. For Health degrees we check your APS against the published APS sub-minimum instead.

Checked against: UCT Guidelines for Admission for NSC holders (2025) (opens the official page)

Checked against the official source

UCT Science Faculty Points Score

For UCT Science, your English counts once, your Mathematics and Physical Sciences each count twice, and your best three other subjects count once (excluding Life Orientation). A result below 40% in a subject scores nothing.

This score means nothing at another university – it can’t be compared with any other university’s.

What we couldn’t confirm
  • The numeric Science cut-offs are on pages of the 2027 prospectus we could not read, so UCT Science degrees show your score but no cut-off to compare it with.

Humanities · 3 years

No points cut-off published for this one – see the note below.

  • English: 50% if it is your Home Language, 60% if it is your First Additional Language
  • Life Orientation: 50%
  • NBT – An NBT Academic Literacy result of Lower Intermediate or Basic normally rules an applicant out.
  • Major-specific – An Economics major needs Maths 60%. A Psychology major needs Maths 50% or a Proficient NBT Quantitative Literacy result.

The subject requirements here are confirmed from the UCT 2027 prospectus, but the numeric FPS cut-off was in the section of the PDF our research pass could not read. We will not show a points number we have not seen on an official page.

  • NBT – An NBT Academic Literacy result of Lower Intermediate or Basic normally rules an applicant out. UCT’s own page says a Psychology major specifically accepts Maths 50% OR a Proficient NBT Quantitative Literacy result instead - we show the Maths route above since it’s the one we can check from marks alone.

You’re admitted to the general BA/BSocSc (same entry point as humanities-generalist) and choose Psychology as a major from second year - UCT is one of the few universities that publishes a major-specific subject note for Psychology, which is why the Maths requirement above is more specific than the general BA entry. This is the undergraduate entry point only - see the career page for the Honours/Master’s route required to actually practise. The numeric FPS cut-off was in the section of the prospectus our research pass could not read.

What we couldn’t verify at UCT

We publish our gaps instead of hiding them.

partially verified

BSc Computer Science

Confirmed Maths >=70% from UCT Computer Science dept page. Full APS and other subject requirements need the Science Faculty Handbook (PDF, not yet located/fetched) before this program can be marked fully verified.

could not verify

Law (LLB) - FPS cut-offs

The UCT 2027 prospectus PDF (about 319 KB) exceeded the fetch limit and was cut off after page 54, before the Law section on page 59. Confirmed: NBTs are compulsory for all LLB applicants and international applicants write the AL test. The numeric FPS thresholds need a targeted re-read of the prospectus.

could not verify

Science - programme FPS cut-offs

Confirmed: UCT Science FPS is out of 800 because Mathematics and Physical Sciences are doubled. The programme-specific thresholds start on page 64 of the prospectus, which was truncated in the fetch. Needs a targeted re-read.

partially verified

Humanities - numeric FPS cut-off

Subject requirements are captured and shown (English HL 50% or FAL 60%, Life Orientation 50%, NBT AL above Basic/Lower Intermediate, Economics major Maths 60%, Psychology major Maths 50% or Proficient NBT QL). The numeric FPS cut-off was in the truncated part of the PDF.

Programmes UCT does not offer

The 2027 prospectus lists no undergraduate Pharmacy, Dentistry or Nursing, and no undergraduate BEd - UCT offers only a postgraduate PGCE.

UCT APS rule source is a 2025 document

UCT’s APS/FPS rule was read from the 2025 Guidelines for Admission. The 2027 prospectus (source of our programme requirements) could not be read in full, so we assume the rule is unchanged. UCT Science (FPS out of 800) and Health Sciences (FPS out of 900, needs NBT) are described by UCT but not calculated.

UCT NBT contact in the research pack

The research pack lists nbt@uct.ac.za for UCT NBT queries. UCT’s own contacts page (uct.ac.za/general-contacts) lists adp-aarp@uct.ac.za and +27 21 650 3523 / 5045 for the National Benchmark Tests. We use UCT’s published contact. The same page lists undergraduate financial aid as financialaid@uct.ac.za / +27 21 650 3545, which differs from the address in the pack.

Research pack claim: UCT faculties use FPS out of 800

The research pack says UCT faculties use a Faculty Points Score out of 800. UCT’s own guidelines say only the Faculty of Science is out of 800; Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Humanities and Law are out of 600 (equal to the APS) and Health Sciences is out of 900. We use UCT’s wording.
