Read this before assuming your matric is enough – the Netherlands is one of the harder destinations for a plain NSC, and most pages that cover it skip why.
Nuffic, the Dutch government body that compares foreign qualifications, rates an NSC as comparable to a HAVO diploma when the certificate itself shows you’ve met the minimum admission requirements for a Higher Certificate, (National) Diploma and/or Bachelor’s programme in South Africa – that’s a property of the NSC endorsement, not a separate completed year of study. An IEB-issued NSC meeting that same condition is rated “at least” a HAVO diploma.
HAVO is the level for universities of applied sciences (hogescholen/HBO). Dutch research universities (WO) normally ask for VWO, one level higher. So a plain matric usually gets you into a university of applied sciences, but often not straight into a research university.
Requires the NSC with 7 examination subjects and an overall average of 70% (Life Orientation and Mathematical Literacy excluded); Science/Engineering, Economics and Medical Sciences also set their own required subjects.

Treat these as confirmed exceptions, not a rule – most Dutch research universities still ask for VWO. Always check the specific faculty’s own page.
States the NSC/IEB is “not considered to be equivalent” to the Dutch pre-university (VWO) diploma. Requires South African applicants to have completed at least the first year (60 ECTS) of a BSc/BEng at an accredited academic university, in the same or a closely related field, with a GPA of at least 75%.
Needs the NSC (with the South Africa Bachelor’s-admission endorsement) AND a successfully completed first year of full-time South African university Bachelor’s study, with a university GPA of at least 70, a supplementary maths exam, and an English score of at least 75.
Both ask for university-level study on top of your NSC, not instead of it – the “not equivalent to VWO” pattern, applied by two different universities.
